A Special Day

The day is not over, it is still June 30th and as mentioned on yesterday's post, today, it is Cheryl's birthday. Do birthdays have to be special? Hope Cheryl had a special one down there in Calgary as she deserves the best.

A day that will remain special forever for Cheryl and her team, and for us, who follow them for quite a while, it is the day they won the Olympics trials. I found this little video that would close beautifully this day and start on a high note Canada day. It is amazing the things that can be found out there.

Getting to know... Dennis Balderston

Behind Team Bernard, there is a person that got a very important role into their success: their coach, Dennis Balderston. The work he does with them is really meaningful providing consistent expert direction helping them to stay focused and calm. Dennis has been coaching Cheryl for about 10 years. Career highlights: Coached two Alberta women’s champions (Cheryl Bernard in 2007 and 2009); played in one Brier (1990, as lead for Harold Breckenridge) and two Canadian senior men’s championships (1996 and 1997, as second for Harold Breckenridge).
By the way, seems we missed his birthday. It was also on June 21st, just like Cori. As it is never too late to do the right thing, all my best wishes to Dennis who has been doing a terrific job to guide Cheryl and her team through the years.

Vancouver 2010 -Screen caps part II - Match 4

Team Bernard shows style and grace. Making choices among hundred of screen captions of one of their match is quite a pleasant task but it is quite difficult to set my mind on only few of them since many images are worth showing.

Cheryl favourite hobby

As I’ll be out of town for few days and in the impossibility to update the blog, I thought it would be a good moment to talk about something Cheryl loves to do in her spare time.

Many of you probably know that Cheryl loves golf. What many of you don’t know is that once asked if she could be any athlete, who would she be? Cheryl’s answer was Annika Sorenstan because she would love to be a good golfer. I don’t know if her answer would be the same today, but at the time, she thought Annika was a classy athlete who really carries herself well. That does remind us of someone, doesn’t it?

She admitted herself that she plays curling a lot better then she plays golf, but there is a proof out there that she is not bad at all. A little bit more than a year ago, she participated to the 3rd annual River Spirit Golf Club Charity Golf Classic benefitting Calgary counseling centre. They didn’t win, but Cheryl and her team mates finished second and they sure had a lot of fun!

You can found more about this event here. I'll be back on Tuesday, stay tuned!

Radio Interview with Cheryl Bernard

Last week, The Fan 590, Toronto’s Sport Radio Jeff Blair and John Shannon were lucky enough to speak on the phone with Cheryl Bernard on their Prime Time Sport show. The main subject was the already famous upcoming event next January: the skins games against Kevin Martin. They also talked about the Olympics, the amazement around it and how her life changed since then. You can find it on their website, but since I can save it and download it, I thought of keeping it safe in this blog. Just click and enjoy!

Picture in the video is a courtesy of my friend Bill: Thanks for sharing your autographed picture with us!

Where’s Cheryl?

As has become an Olympic tradition, the 2010 Winter Olympics began with an elaborate opening ceremony. The ceremony was held on February 12, 2010, at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia and featured, among other events and performances, the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.

An important part of it : the entrance of the athletes in the stadium, hundreds of them from all part of the world. It was nice this year because they decided to bring them in at the beginning of the ceremony. Cheryl already expressed her excitement about it here but there she was, in the middle of all those Olympians, and she was one of them so were Cori, Carolyn and Susan. They are Olympians, and no one can take that away!

Let’s have a little fun!!! You know the game right? Where is Cheryl? You can’t miss her, with her great smile. Find her, and you will find Team Bernard in its whole!
